Trap Shooting Stance by Robert Churchill and How to Use the Wobble and American Traps

florida online hunter safety course

This article will examine Churchill’s trap shooting stance, the Wobble American, Down-The-Line (DTL), and traps. By the end of the article, you will be able to understand the benefits of each and how to use them effectively. In addition, we'll cover the importance of proper foot position and toe point for a successful break. What is a proper trapshooting stance?

Churchill's trap shooting stance

The basic principle of Robert Churchill's trap shooting stance is the same as that of Stanbury, the famous British clay shooter. Churchill stood with his heels closer, which is the key difference. Both stances emphasize trust in the eyes and the use of a leading hand to direct barrels. This style is more natural and instinctive but requires an excellent gun fit.

Churchill explained his theory of a master eye. While scientifically disputable, Churchill arrived at the correct conclusion in the wrong direction. Churchill maintained that the shotgun should be fired with both eyes open in order for it to function properly. He also believed that gun-fitting can correct vision issues. Churchill's theory is useful for some shooters, in spite of its flaws.

American Trap

The most popular stance for trap shooting is the American one. This stance is stabler than the traditional one and gives you better control during difficult shooting conditions. This stance is especially helpful for domestic trap shoots where wind is a factor. The rear foot should be 90 degrees to the break point of the gun. American trapshooting stance was originally created to accommodate both types. There are many differences between the traditional and modern stances.

The shooting stance should be relaxed and not cause strain to muscles. Your feet should be about shoulder width apart. The front knee should be bent slightly and the rear straight. Additionally, the front and reverse heels should be spaced at least nine inches apart as if you were looking at a clock. The rear heel should be in line with the front heel. The shooter will be able to maintain a level stare and balance while shooting.

Down-The-Line (DTL)

The Down-The Line (DTL) shooting position was developed from the shooting of live birds. Shooters stand in five positions 15 metres behind the trap and release targets that fall within a specified arc. This is the most commonly used stance. Shooters take five shots from each position, moving from left to right. Each lane is different distance away from the traphouse. Shooters typically have one shot per lane after hitting the first target.

The DTL shooter is able to move from one lane into the next shooting five targets per lanes. The trap is released when the shooter calls out "Pull". The scorer then counts the clay hit and records the shooter’s score. The scorer marks the shot and the shooter can shoot quickly. This way, each round of shooting ensures the shooter is shooting the proper number of clays.

Wobble trap

The Wobble Trap can be used as an extreme version of the standard trap. The target's path of flight is more random and the shooter has two chances at hitting it. This trap is not officially authorized by the ATA. But, experienced shooters frequently use this shooting stance. While it's similar to a standard trap, the wobble trap is not shot with a 12-gauge shotgun. Shooters aim for random movements, so the clays can be shot from any direction and angle.

Although the wobbletrap has become a very popular sport, it is important to be comfortable with your shooting position. If you don't like to shoot on a flat surface, you can also use a standing platform to shoot the Wobble Trap. There are currently five stands available for shooting the Wobble Trap. Additional clay throwers are constantly being added to the range. Make sure to look at the schedule on the home page of the range to see when additional shooters will be added.
